Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is an evidence-based practice deeply rooted in science. It helps people at any age to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities or ‘occupations’.

A child’s occupations include eating, playing, sleeping, dressing, learning, interacting with friends and many other daily activities. Pediatric occupational therapists help the children and their families by promoting active participation in daily activities, offering prevention and interventions in different settings. They provide ways to overcome barriers to achieve independence and participation while using a holistic and inclusive perspective.

Our therapy programs address the following areas:

  • Sensory Integration

  • Positioning and Posture

  • Gross Motor Coordination

  • Fine Motor Coordination

  • Visual Motor and Perceptual Development

  • Motor Planning/Praxis

  • Self-Help and Independence

  • Handwriting

Therapy sessions are offered in Arabic, English & French.

Behavior Therapy

The Behaviour Therapy program at Kalimati utilizes a variety of training methods including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Verbal Behaviour Intervention using Strategies of Applied Behaviour Analysis. The program focuses on children’s functional skills to improve their quality of life using specific, research-based methods.

These skills are broken into small steps and re-taught, with the goal of working toward more advanced verbal communication, reduced behavior problems, richer social interaction, and eventual success in the classroom and day-to-day life.

Common skills addressed within Behaviour Therapy programs:

  • Disruptive and Aggressive Behaviour

  • Impulsivity and Frustration Tolerance

  • Inattention and Work Behaviour

  • Resistance to Change and Adaptive Skills

  • Manipulative and Attention-seeking Behaviour

  • Self-stimulatory and other Stereotypic Behaviours

Behaviour Therapy also includes the training of parents and caregivers in order to help them learn effective behavioural teaching strategies to help maximize their child’s success. Behaviour Therapy gives parents the confidence, tools and strategies needed to support their child.

Group Programs

The Kalimati team recognizes that some children benefit from group interaction where they can practice their speech & language, play, social and behavior skills alongside other children of similar age and/or ability, but still under the expert guidance of their familiar therapists.

Kalimati encourages parents to contact us regarding starting a group for a 1 weekly session over a 6-week period, or 8 sessions over 4-weeks. The group would need a minimum of 4 children to make it effective for interaction, sharing etc.

Please contact us with your ideas and needs and we can work towards a suitable outcome.

Some ideas of successful groups have included:

  • Sign language groups: Children love learning this new language, even more so if they learn it with their friends so they have a “secret” language together!  Adult groups have been very successful enabling many people to communicate with deaf colleagues or friends in the community. ASL is taught by a fluent sign language therapist.

  • Language groups: aiming at supporting children with delayed language development. Separate groups could include improving your child’s Arabic, English or French language ready for starting school.

  • Social-Emotional skills: help your child to make friends, share and cope with his developing emotions both at school and at home.

  • Handwriting skills: another fun group designed to improve handwriting and make your child feel more confident in the classroom.

  • Academic support: many children miss basic concepts in the early stages of learning and once identified by their teacher the problem can be addressed in a small group to give your child the opportunity to relearn and practice their new-found skills.

  • Multi-disciplinary morning program: let your child join in a mini-classroom and enjoy some fun morning sessions during the holidays!

School & Nursery based services

Kalimati is now offering Speech, Occupational and Behavior therapy services at Nurseries and Schools. An initial meeting with the parents is followed by a classroom observation session, a full assessment with report and recommendations, concluding with a feedback session with the parents.

With parental consent, therapy can then be carried out in the nursery / school, with parents attending occasionally for updates and counsel on therapy outcomes. Continuous guidance on supporting your child with his therapy goals will be provided to the nursery / school staff involved in your child’s care.

Sign language classes

American Sign Language (ASL) is a language that employs signs made by hand movements combined with facial expressions and body postures. It is the primary language, or one of several communication options, used by people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Kalimati is now offering a beginner's ASL class for adults and children:

  • The class consists of 10 lessons every Saturday morning.

  • Includes basic information related to the Deaf community, basic vocabulary and finger spelling with an interactive and friendly approach.

  • Ongoing assessments will ensure the attainment of basic level ASL.

  • First come first serve basis. Private groups can be arranged.

  • For more information or registration, please call 04-2839196 or email
